Kufri | Crow Museum of Asian Art

KUFRI’s first museum installation at the Crow Museum of Asian Art brings together cultural heritage, immigrant identity, and handmade textile traditions through the shared language of indigo. Curated by Natalia Di Pietrantonio, the installation draws from the antique kimonos of the Montgomery Collection to create an immersive space that blends historical learning with contemporary artistic expression.

At its centre is Ruminations, an 8 × 7 ft textile work tracing indigo’s global journey across Japan, India, and West Africa. Created using Japanese boro mending and kantha stitching, the piece weaves together repair, memory, and continuity—placing living craft traditions in dialogue with museum practice.

The installation extends beyond a single artwork to include educational displays of indigo seeds, dyeing processes, and a curated selection of finished textiles. Together, these elements invite visitors into a cross-cultural exploration of material knowledge, migration, and identity embedded in cloth.

This milestone marks KUFRI’s entry into the museum and contemporary art space, opening pathways for future collaborations that honour heritage craft, lived histories, and the communities that sustain them.
